On Saturday 23 June, Bas Kosters presented his latest
collection 'Dear Sir / Madam: HOPE' in a spectacular show
at the Westergasterrein during 'We Make M-ODE',
a multidisciplinary fashion event in Amsterdam.
"My HOPE collection comes from a strong need to produce
a graphic collection with a message," says Bas Kosters.
"From a supermarket aesthetics I went to work with the given HOPE."
HOPE is the starting point for a series of works around fashion, textile and visual art in which the designer explores, illuminates and shapes the term 'hope'. From a personal experience he has created a world in which HOPE is the guideline: The United States of HOPE.
'Dear Sir / Madam: HOPE' is characterized by typical Bas Kosters elements: expressive prints, fabric treatments, recycling and masks. The collection links up with earlier storylines that run through Bas' work and collections. The famous pink doll and the Bas Kosters TV Head Doll also made his re-entry into the HOPE collection. A huge batch of worn work overalls form the basis of many collection pieces. These have been merged with the results of the 'Waste to Want' workshop where Bas Kosters worked during the "We make the City" festival, three days prior to the show. The pieces were presented in an explosive and dynamic catwalk show with many diverse models and an intense soundtrack by Star Studded Studios.
A series of short films, made in collaboration with the artist Iztok Klančar, will appear in the collection, depicting the theme HOPE in different ways.
Robot bag in collaboration with Makers Unite
During the show the result of a special collaboration between Bas Kosters Studio and 'Makers Unite' was also launched. Bas Kosters developed a bag in the form of a robot for this platform, which will be available later this year. The bags are made from collected lifejackets of refugees and are manufactured by status holders in a studio in Amsterdam.
HOPE stands for cherishing dreams, that they can come out, see light at the end of the tunnel, or want to see it. HOPE stands for a fresh start, the rebirth, the sunny side up, but also for 'we should have known better'. HOPE stands for a leader who takes you or sells you a dream. HOPE stands for the ideals you strive for and want to fight for.
