HIGHLIGHTS OF 2018

HIGHLIGHTS OF 2018

2018 was quite a year. We hosted unique exhibitions, created amazing
collaborations, introduced the first-ever Dutch edition of What She Said,
hosted a pop-up store and welcomed many new designers to
the X BANK family. Here are the highlights from our year.

“SAKURA”
We started the year with the retrospective exhibition SAKURA by Maarten Vrolijk.
The Amsterdam-based artist and designer showcased his stunning colourful
glass sculptures, oil paintings and drawings that were inspired by his lifelong
fascination for nature and what everybody else seems to call “everyday things.”
We loved showing his amazing works, which had the goal of making people’s
everyday lives a bit more beautiful through the many little details that evoke
the unexpected.

“Make It Gold”
In March, we opened the new exhibition by Michiel Verstraten with the theme
Make It Gold. In keeping true to his theme, every painting was decorated with
gold leaf. This gold leaf was used as power symbol for immaculate beauty.
The exhibition consisted of different visual statements about society. All art
pieces were part of the puzzle; one unique piece of art will never explain
the world, but it gives the illusion that it will. Only if you can see the true
beauty, the world explains itself.

“Lost in Time”
In May, the gold leaf artworks made way for a new exhibition showing a special
gathering between humanity and architecture, Lost in Time by Annelies Damen.
The series consisted of photographs shot in the oldest museum in Amsterdam.
Her main character got out of her conventional environment to consider where
she wanted to go. Without pressure of time or environment, she found a
renewed freedom.

“Corpus Dei”
On the eve of the Amsterdam Pride, we celebrated our latest exhibition and
the Dutch premiere of Corpus Dei by photographer Sabrina van den Heuvel.
The series of photographs connected visual art, fashion and poetry to a total
concept. In this exhibition, emotional issues such as ecstasy, happiness and
longing played a big part.

Vogue Flower Market
This past summer, we were present at the very first Vogue Flower Market in Amsterdam. During this high-end summer Sunday market in the historical
gardens of the Rijksmuseum, everyone was strolling amongst flowers,
clothing and accessories while enjoying delicious treats. For this special
occasion, we asked 10 of our favourite Dutch designers to design a custom
pair of wooden clogs in their signature style. Guests could vote for their
favourite design and even win a €300 X BANK gift card.

Lichting 2018
Every year during Fashion Week Amsterdam, Lichting organizes a spectacular
catwalk show where 14 fashion graduates from the top seven Dutch academies
present their collections. This show builds a bridge between students and the
talent-hungry fashion industry.

This year, we asked fashion goddess Martien Mellema to curate seven looks
from the participants. We were proud to present this exclusive Lichting 2018
exhibition on our ground floor.

“De Maandag Wasdag”
While summer started to fade, we proudly presented the new collection by one
of our own designers: Tess van Zalinge. Her collection De Maandag Wasdag was
built around her love for crafts, nature and folklore. She combined Dutch heritage
with various forms of craftmanship. Tess van Zalinge’s signature is breaking the
status quo without losing its essence by creating a clash between functionality
and sensuality. In creating the illusion of white organic undies hanging in the fields
to dryon a typical Monday afternoon, she tried to get as Dutch as possible.
In our opinion, she succeeded!

collection at X BANK. This limited-edition collection consisted of shirts
and hoodies, and all proceeds went directly to Orange Babies. Ward Stegerhoek,
the renownedDutch hairstylist and owner of Wardements, specially designed
these pieces for Orange Orange babies for his Fall/Winter collection.

Denham x Montblanc
Last but not least, we hosted the launch party for the Denham x Montblanc
collaboration, a special-edition Meisterstuck pen. This pen was commemorated
by a photography series shot by Paul Bellaart and featured 10 young Dutch
creatives from the realms of design, writing, fashion and tattoo art using the pen
in their studios. In a time where younger generations are more likely to use laptops
and mobile phones than pens, these young creatives prefer the traditional art of
pen and paper in their artistic processes. The main goal of the collaboration is to
celebrate craftsmanship and empower young creatives to push their boundaries.
