INSIDE X BANK features one of our Dutch designers
answering five fashionable questions. This edition features
Jeroen Oude Sogtoen, the mastermind (and nose)
behind perfume house Maison Mona di Orio. 

‘The quality fragrance house focuses on creations with true credibility,
artisanality, and uncompromising luxury. Art, fashion and design are important
fundamentals within the creation of new fragrances. For Maison Mona di Orio,
luxury is the ability to inspire an emotion’. 


Who is your favorite X BANK designer, and why? (Besides yourself, of course)
It would have to be Jelle Mastenbroek because he encourages one to reconsider stereotypes and to investigate whether it is possible to add new meaning to traditional interpretations. By adding sound, Jelle plays with the sensorial experience. He crosses boundaries and tries to build a bridge between art and design. This is something we are also trying to do at Maison Mona di Orio. We want to build connections between the past and the present, and to dissolve the barriers between art, design and fashion.

What does it mean for you as a designer to have your products at X BANK?
I see X BANK as an important international platform for Dutch fashion, design and art. X BANK’s presence and success shows that Dutch design is very much alive and thriving.

What does typical Dutch art, fashion and design mean to you?
As Dutch, we dare to think outside the box, and we dare to be playful. We have respect for traditions, but are not stuck in them or in the past. It is about having an open vision and an open mind.

 

                      

 

 What is the development process for creating a new perfume? How do you get inspired for a new fragrance?
Inspiration is everywhere - as long as you know how to look for it. Frederik Dalman (our in-house perfumer) and I are constantly searching for the things that will trigger our imagination. It might be a color or a texture, or stories of a long lost civilisation, anything that may give us that first seed of an idea. With time, that seed will sprout into something more focused, the idea becomes more clear, and then finally, after many months of work, it ends up growing into a finished fragrance! 


What are your future plans for Maison Mona di Orio?
I want to create even more made-to-measure fragrances. We also see within the market a clear shift towards a strong need for true luxury. We will focus on this by creating and curating prestige quality fragrances. Frederik and I are looking to create new fragrances that are both based on the fundaments of our heritage and have an eye towards the future. This is very Mona-like.
