Last Wednesday, the fashion students of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy presented their Fashion Show 2018, containing the collections of a new generation of fashion graduates and a selection of work by first and second-year fashion students. This year the location was the impressive, former shipbuilding hangar at the NDSM shipyard in Amsterdam-Noord.
Fashion Show 2018 presents the results of a personal and experimental learning process of this year's fashion graduates: Nikola Čemanová, Lieselot Elzinga, Yaroslav Glazunov, Edward Liao, Galatee Martin, Jahmuna Mcclean, Yana Monk, Anna Myntekaer, Sonia Oet, Antonina Pawlowicz, Tatiana Quard and Sonia Witwitzka.
The graduates offer challenging visions of fashion with a feeling for both the contemporary and the visionary. Strikingly, they dare to escape from the fixed-line and work in an intuitive way. They relate to the imperfect, analogous reality, seek autonomy and are aware of their position between antiquity and the future.
The graduation show is regarded as an important platform for the new generation of designers who are at the beginning of an (international) career and showed their collection to a large audience for the very first time. This year the NDSM Wharf was the location of this event. Once one of the largest shipyards in the world, now the City of Art, an architectural monument with around four hundred artists, designers, architects and stage builders: one of the 'Netherland's largest breeding grounds'.
