The Amsterdam Light Festival

The Amsterdam Light Festival

The 7th Amsterdam Light Festival is almost here!
From 29 November to late January, the city centre
is decorated with the most beautiful light installations,
drawing artists and visitors from all over the world.

Displaying over 200 artworks since 2012, Amsterdam Light Festival has
developed into one of the largest light art festivals in Europe. Every year,
artists from around the world work on a new exhibition that is made
especially for Amsterdam. After their premiere in Amsterdam, a number
of these artworks are included in a permanent collection that travels
the world.

The theme of this year’s edition is “The Medium is the Message”,
the famous statement by the Canadian scientist Marshall McLuhan.
According to him, the way we send a message is just as important as the
message itself. The role of light in conveying a message and the city of
Amsterdam as a medium for telling stories are central to this edition.
More than 600 artists from around the world have looked into this issue
and submitted their concept. Thirty artworks were selected to light up
the historic city centre and take you on a journey along the light artworks
here in Amsterdam. By exhibiting high-quality and innovative light art in
public spaces, the festival aims to inspire and enlighten its visitors, artists and partners.

You can also vote for your favourite artwork this year.
The Public Award will be presented to the winning artist during the last weekend of the festival.

The Amsterdam Light Festival is from 29 November 2018 to 20 January 2019, every day from 17:00 to 23:00.
